If you’re working in the Netherlands and want to enjoy this hobby legally, you’ll need the VISpas—the official fishing permit for Dutch waters. What is the VISpas?

The VISpas is the official permit issued by Sportvisserij Nederland (The Dutch Sport Fishing Association). It grants you the right to fish in over 90% of Dutch waters, including canals, rivers, lakes, and ponds.
With just one permit, you’ll have access to thousands of fishing locations—many of which are near residential areas or cities where DB Work employees live.

Who needs a VISpas?

Anyone over the age of 14 who wants to fish in public waters in the Netherlands using one or two fishing rods and natural bait must have a VISpas. This includes international workers, regardless of nationality, who are temporarily or permanently employed in the Netherlands.

How can you obtain a VISpas?

Option 1: Online – The Fastest Method

  1. Visit the official website: www.vispas.nl.
  2. Select the English language (if necessary).
  3. Choose your local fishing association (usually in the city where you live).
  4. Fill out the form with your personal details.
  5. Pay the annual fee with a credit card (Visa/Mastercard).
    📧 You’ll receive a temporary permit via email, valid immediately, and the physical permit will arrive by post at your Dutch address within 1–2 weeks.

Option 2: At Fishing Shops

If you prefer a physical purchase, you can buy the permit directly from:

  • Specialty stores (hengelsportwinkel),
  • Certain supermarkets or gas stations.

To purchase, you’ll need:

  • An ID card or passport,
  • A mailing address in the Netherlands.

How much does the VISpas cost?

The price varies slightly depending on the local association, but generally:

  • Average cost: €35–45 per year.
  • Validity: The entire calendar year (January 1–December 31), regardless of purchase date.

With a standard VISpas, you’re allowed to fish using two rods and any type of bait. If you want to fish at night, you’ll need an additional permit called NachtVIStoestemming.
For those who wish to use three rods (where permitted), you’ll need the Derde Hengeltoestemming—a permit for a third rod.

Where can you fish with a VISpas?

With a VISpas, you can fish in most Dutch waters, but not all are automatically accessible. Therefore:

What rules should you follow?

Fishing in the Netherlands is strictly regulated. Key rules include:

  • Do not fish during the closed seasons, especially for species like pike, zander, or perch.
  • Caught fish must be released alive unless kept for personal consumption. You may keep up to 10 dead fish (over 15 cm) near the water. Keeping live fish in buckets or bags is considered animal cruelty.
  • Keep your fishing area clean.
  • Selling caught fish is prohibited.
  • Fines for violations start at €90.
  • Be mindful of designated fishing times or restricted zones.
