Autumn in the Netherlands

1. The weather can change several times in a single day

If in summer you left for work in the sunshine, in autumn you may start the day with fog, get caught in the rain at noon and see the sun again in the afternoon.

During autumn in the Netherlands, a waterproof jacket and proper footwear become almost essential.

A simple tip is to check the forecast before leaving your accommodation and always have a rain jacket with you.

2. It gets dark faster than you might expect

Starting in September, the days become shorter and shorter.

take on spectacular colors and are perfect for a few hours of relaxation after a week of work.

5. Other autumn events worth following

If you have free time during the weekend, autumn brings many interesting events in the Netherlands. Some of the best-known are:

• Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) – October 21–25, 2026, Amsterdam. Electronic music, parties and events throughout the city.
• Amsterdam Marathon – in October, for those passionate about sports or those who simply want to experience the atmosphere around the race.
• GLOW Eindhoven – November 7–14, 2026. A free light festival with spectacular routes and installations throughout the city.
• Amsterdam Fringe Festival – in September, with performances and events in several locations.
• Sinterklaas Intocht – in November, in several cities, the traditional parade through which Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) officially arrives in the Netherlands.

Not all of them are free, but many also include activities at no cost or can be watched from public spaces. The easiest option is to check the agenda of the city where you live or of the nearest large city before the weekend.
